Georges-Antoine Klein, an agent who became ill and died aboard Conrad's steamer, is proposed by literary critics as a basis for Kurtz. There have been many proposed sources for the character of the antagonist, Kurtz. the last pages of Heart of Darkness where the interview of the man and the girl locks in-as it were-the whole 30000 words of narrative description into one suggestive view of a whole phase of life and makes of that story something quite on another plane than an anecdote of a man who went mad in the Centre of Africa. On, in a letter to William Blackwood, Conrad remarked, In 1917, for future editions of the book, Conrad wrote an " Author's Note" where he, after denying any "unity of artistic purpose" underlying the collection, discusses each of the three stories and makes light commentary on Marlow, the narrator of the tales within the first two stories. The volume consisted of Youth: a Narrative, Heart of Darkness and The End of the Tether in that order. In 1902, Heart of Darkness was included in the book Youth: a Narrative, and Two Other Stories, published on 13 November 1902 by William Blackwood. The tale was first published as a three-part serial, in February, March, and April 1899, in Blackwood's Magazine (February 1899 was the magazine's 1000th issue: special edition). He described Heart of Darkness as "a wild story" of a journalist who becomes manager of a station in the (African) interior and makes himself worshipped by a tribe of natives. When Conrad began to write the novella, eight years after returning from Africa, he drew inspiration from his travel journals. He guided the ship up the tributary Lualaba River to the trading company's innermost station, Kindu, in Eastern Congo Free State Marlow has similar experiences to the author. While sailing up the Congo River from one station to another, the captain became ill and Conrad assumed command. In 1890, at the age of 32, Conrad was appointed by a Belgian trading company to serve on one of its steamers. Composition and publication Joseph Conrad based Heart of Darkness on his own experiences in the Congo. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness 67th on their list of the 100 best novels in English of the 20th century. It provided the inspiration for Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 film Apocalypse Now. Originally issued as a three-part serial story in Blackwood's Magazine to celebrate the 1000th edition of the magazine, Heart of Darkness has been widely republished and translated in many languages. Conrad draws parallels between London ("the greatest town on earth") and Africa as places of darkness. The novella's setting provides the frame for Marlow's story of his fascination for the prolific ivory trader Kurtz. Marlow is given a text by Kurtz, an ivory trader working on a trading station far up the river, who has "gone native" and is the object of Marlow's expedition.Ĭentral to Conrad's work is the idea that there is little difference between "civilised people" and "savages." Heart of Darkness implicitly comments on imperialism and racism. Although Conrad does not name the river on which most of the narrative takes place, at the time of writing the Congo Free State, the location of the large and economically important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. The novel is widely regarded as a critique of European colonial rule in Africa, whilst also examining the themes of power dynamics and morality. Heart of Darkness (1899) is a novella by Polish-English novelist Joseph Conrad in which the sailor Charles Marlow tells his listeners the story of his assignment as steamer captain for a Belgian company in the African interior. Heart of Darkness was first published as a three-part serial story in Blackwood's Magazine. This stems from the Medieval tradition of wearing his Lady’s colors to declare his love. The groom, too, wore a flower that appeared in the bridal bouquet in his button-hole. Her all-white bouquet had lily-of-the-valley (representing trustworthiness, purity), sweet William (gallantry), hyacinth (loveliness), myrtle (love in marriage), and ivy (continuity). Altogether, these flowers’ meanings reveal the hope of a loving, everlasting marriage. For example, look to the royal flower bouquet at the wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, to Kate Middleton (now Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge). One tradition is to select the flowers of a wedding bouquet based on plant symbolism. Red roses mean “I love you,” making them ideal for Valentine’s Day (or any day, really!). Coral rose: friendship, modesty, sympathy.Pink rose: grace, happiness, gentleness.White rose: purity, innocence, reverence, a new beginning, a fresh start.Red roses symbolize love and desire, but roses come in a variety of colors, and each has its own meaning. Unsurprisingly, the color of the rose plays a huge role. The calla lily was interpreted to mean “magnificent beauty,” and a clover said, “think of me.” Likewise, a white violet meant “innocence,” while a purple violet said the bouquet giver’s “thoughts were occupied with love.” A red rose was used to openly express feelings of love, while a red tulip was a confession of love. Pink carnations say “I’ll never forget you,” a sweet sentiment any time of year! Take, for instance, all of the different meanings attributed to variously colored carnations: Pink meant “I’ll never forget you” red said “my heart aches for you” purple conveyed capriciousness white was for “the sweet and lovely” and yellow expressed romantic rejection. Some plants, including roses, poppies, and lilies, could express a wide range of emotions based on their color alone. Thoughts of absent friends, Lasting affectionįlowers provide an incredibly nuanced form of communication. Purity, Enlightenment, Self-regeneration, and Rebirthīlissful pleasures, Goodbye, Thank you for a lovely time Sweetness, Tears of the Virgin Mary, Humility Open heart, Levity, Lightness, Fickleness (pink or simple varieties). Gratitude for being understood, Frigidity and heartlessness Meanings of Herbs, Flowers and Other PlantsĪlas for my poor heart, My heart aches, Deep loveįlower of the Gladiators, Integrity, Strength, Victory (Please note: Our chart below reflects mainly Victorian flower language.)Ĭlick on linked plant names for a photo and growing guide. See our chart below for meanings of herbs, flowers, and other plants. The meanings and traditions associated with flowers have certainly changed over time, and different cultures assign varying ideas to the same species, but the fascination with “perfumed words” persists just the same. More examples of plants and their associated human qualities during the Victorian era include bluebells and kindness, peonies and bashfulness, rosemary and remembrance, and tulips and passion. And, of course, a wilted bouquet delivered an obvious message! How the ribbon was tied said something: Tied to the left, the flowers’ symbolism applied to the giver, whereas tied to the right, the sentiment was in reference to the recipient. If the flowers were given upside down, then the conveyed idea was the opposite of what was traditionally meant. How flowers were presented and in what condition was important. Similarly, if given a rose declaring “devotion” or an apple blossom showing “preference,” one might return to the suitor a yellow carnation to express “disdain.” Plants could also express aversive feelings, such as the “conceit” of pomegranate or the “bitterness” of aloe. A “yes” answer came in the form of flowers handed over with the right hand if the left hand was used, the answer was “no.” Nearly all Victorian homes had, alongside the Bible, guidebooks for deciphering the “language,” although definitions shifted depending on the source.įollowing the protocol of Victorian-era etiquette, flowers were primarily used to deliver messages that couldn’t be spoken aloud. In a sort of silent dialogue, flowers could be used to answer “yes” or “no” questions. Learning the special symbolism of flowers became a popular pastime during the 1800s. Rating: 1/5 it’s bad and they should feel bad. The viewer is capable of reading body language and context cues rather easily, but apparently this writer/director didn’t agree. They don’t literally need to say “now what are you up to?”. There’s no reason someone cannot look out a window and look as though they are thinking. Rating: 3/5/5 In House of Secrets: The Burari Deaths, Netflix explores the sensational case in Delhi where 11 members of a family were found dead in their house in 2018. If someone told me a highschooler wrote the dialogue, I might have a little more understanding. Maybe I’m just biased, but this really felt like a low budget made-for-tv, safe for the Disney channel idea of a horror movie. Review: I feel like, at this point, if someone is going to make a scary story involving people moving into a house and shit going left, they need to at least keep it on par with the kinds of movies that actually land in the theaters. But they soon realize they’ve just become part of a dark history. Starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson.Description: A mother and her young daughter move into a new house looking for a fresh start. It is humility and loyalty that make this boy a worthy hero, and accounts for some of the magic of the Harry Potter franchise. Harry, whose unique heritage has made him a celebrity, chooses to befriend those who are of questionable lineage, poor and in servitude. It appears the late Lord Voldemort had a certain aversion to wizards without pureblood pedigrees, and the infamous villain’s sympathizers are still trying to establish an upper class. Yet, what keeps the film from succumbing to monster movie status is the powerful theme that emerges. Rowling’s novel fairly faithfully, seeing these sometimes-sinister encounters depicted will be more frightening for many viewers than just reading about them. (Any one with phobias will likely relate to Ron’s reactions to the situations.) While the movie script follows J.K. Fans familiar with the book will remember the inclusion of several fearful creatures including snakes and spiders. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is not for the fainthearted. The perilous path to the truth leads them to the Forbidden Forrest, the sewers of the great castle, and requires a certain disregard for school rules. Joined by Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) and Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), the friends set out to find the real culprit. Suspicions about who may have unleashed the deadly unknown demon quickly turn to Harry, thanks to his innate ability for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and the unveiling of an unusual talent the lad didn’t know he possessed. Paralyzed classmates, threats written in blood, and rumors of a mysterious chamber housing a monster have the entire academic establishment running scared. Narrowly escaping being expelled before classes even begin, the bespectacled apprentice soon discovers there was just cause for the elf’s words of caution. But his departure is plagued with disaster-everything from a missed train, and an uncontrollable flying car, to a tree that packs a punch. Despite warnings from Dobby (voice of Toby Jones), a self-abusive servant known as a house elf, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) decides to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for his second year. Fortunately, concealed pockets on the rear and sides can hide the shoulder straps when not in use. I feel that the handles will last under heavy use because they’re sewn tightly. This minimalist messenger bag is simple to grab and go-we can use this briefcase either as a carry bag or a shoulder bag. Both sides of the bag have a Molle webbing, so it’s easy to hang other gear and pouches. I think the 600D nylon fabric is integrated with a water-repellent line to protect the items inside from moisture. The construction feels sturdy because I’ve used the bag in all seasons, and it’s still pretty intact. I found four utility compartments at the front, which are good for storing my cell phone and other small items. I believe that the padded sleeve can fit a 15.6-inch laptop and be secured well with an internal anti-collision isolation pad. There is plenty of space and little pockets all around. This tactical military messenger bag is well constructed and looks rugged with its army green color. GES is the most favorite tactical briefcase with its padded laptop compartment and multiple utility pockets. The strap tends to slip occasionally, so we need to readjust it constantly. Heads-up: However, the shoulder strap isn’t the best with this laptop bag. Best of all, this bag comes with an adjustable strap with a breathable pad to reduce pressure for easy carrying. The loops also come in handy in attaching my sunglasses. I’m most delighted with the large side pockets because they can hold any water bottle size, including a 12-16oz thermos size coffee mug. I love the pen sleeve design as it makes the pens easy to access, plus the built-in key holder and dedicated file section can hold my papers securely. It has many deep pockets, like four at the front, two at the sides, and four at the interior to hold valuable items. This tactical laptop messenger bag looks roomier than it appears. The seams look reinforced, so I don’t have to worry about accidental rips and tears. I like that the zippers open and close together at the top opening for easy access to items. The material is crafted from water-resistant nylon fabric with SBS zippers that slide up and down smoothly. I like that the laptop pouch inside the main compartment has an anti-collision isolation pad to protect the device from shocks and impacts. Lifewit is a small tactical messenger bag with a 17-inch laptop compartment. Heads-up: The only thing I dislike is the Velcro strip on the back pocket because it’s a bit loud when you rip it open. Since I like to personalize my bag, I appreciate the Velcro patch slot on the front. There’s a concealed back pocket for valuables, plus expandable side pockets to carry water bottles. I was surprised to find a luggage handle attachment because it makes this bag even easier to handle. I like that the detachable shoulder strap is wide and well-padded to reduce shoulder pressure when I’m carrying heavier weight. It’s also very comfortable to wear, thanks to its ambidextrous cross-body stabilizing strap for users to switch between right or left shoulders. One of the bag’s key features is a wrap-around web platform that allows the upgrade of more gear storage. Additionally, the main compartment has sufficient space to fit my documents and other tactical gear to last for the day. It comes with an integrated quick draw compartment, which I love to store my pistol for easy access. This delivery messenger bag features a padded laptop sleeve to store sensitive electronics and a front admin panel to make small EDC gear within reach, like flashlights and keys. This one is made of water-resistant 1050D nylon, making it a good waterproof messenger bag for any environment. 5.11 Tactical Rush Delivery Messenger Bagĥ.11 Tactical Rush is one of the best tactical messenger bags for men with its multiple compartments and super resilient construction.

The latest version of the Magic Trackpad isn’t much different from its predecessors, simply switching to a USB-C-to-Lightning cable for charging, and opting for more smoothly rounded corners that match Apple’s latest keyboard designs. It’s pretty expensive, but Apple’s Magic Trackpad avoids the mistakes that it tends to make with its mice. Prices vary a lot online, though, so it’s worth shopping around before buying. MX Master 3 For Business, which costs around £130, but includes a special ‘Bolt’ USB transmitter that provides super-strong security features for business users. And, just recently, Logitech launched the MX Master 3 For Mac, which is the same price but only has Bluetooth connectivity, and a more Mac-like Space Grey colour scheme. However, Logitech has added two other models since then, including the This costs £119.99, and is still the model that we’d recommend for most users, as it includes both Bluetooth and a small USB wireless transmitter that provides greater security and reliability than Bluetooth. The original version (which we are looking at here), was launched in 2019 and is simply called the MX Master 3. Battery life is good too, at around two months – twice that of Apple’s Magic Mouse or Trackpad. There’s also a second wheel on the side, which allows you to scroll horizontally – which is great for photo-editing and graphics work – and two more buttons that can be programmed using the Options app. It has the usual left/right buttons and a scroll wheel, but the scroll-wheel works in two different modes, with a high-speed mode for zooming through long documents and web pages, as well as a slower mode that provides greater precision and tactile feedback. The mouse has a smoothly curved surface that fits the palm of the hand very well, along with a thumb-rest for extra comfort. All three versions have the same basic design – which is for right-handed users only, unfortunately – so make sure you choose the correct model before pressing the Buy button. Mind you, its MX range of mice are also very well designed, with no less than three versions of the current MX Master 3 now available. Logitech therefore takes top spot in this review of best mice for the Mac, simply by virtue of the fact that it’s one of the few manufacturers that includes a proper Mac version of its Options app for its mice (and keyboards too). Most conventional two-button mice will work with a Mac without needing any additional software, but more advanced mice that have additional buttons and controls do need an app that will allow you to program those extra buttons to work the way that you want. Instead, it’s a surprisingly joyful throwback to everything that makes the Star Trek universe great. So Beyond, which arrives with a brand new creative team behind the scenes and seemingly a total lack of buzz, could have easily been a total flop. Meanwhile, 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness was a shambles on almost every level. Though I probably prefer 2009’s Star Trek slightly to this one, just because seeing the ensemble cast gel onscreen was amazingly fun, let’s be honest - that story was a total mess. Lower Decks, the Stars are the Crew on their Ship.It didn’t have to be good. Do we really want to see some Marquie 2 Reloaded History? But then it is moving away from Starfleet (ST:Renegades?). Picard: This Show do not count, because it is surrounded Picard and his Crew Buddies around him, Perhaps the Children of Sung and the X-Borgs could get an Spinoff with the Ranger’s Power combined. I do not think the Fans want to see an War Admiral Pike Strange New World: It is an well written pre-TOS TV Show. So looking at the current popular TV Shows guide them as Compass:ĭiscovery: to save an Entire Galaxy (again)? But i do not know if this is well received enough to bring it to the Cinemas or even “Netflix”. The Last time i am remembering of War is the DS9 War Arc. So show me a current TV Show that is on War with some other Species? Not even Discovery are currently on War. Well first what Red Line would they create? I mean until Now not so many TV Star Trek Shows are like the Kelvin Movies, right? Kelvin Movies is like StarFleet is on War. Unfortunately they never tried that approach again. TMP was a really dull movie but it was definitely an ambitious one that tried to get people to think and give the story a little more weight beyond just firing at Klingons. Create stakes where it’s not some uber-villain in the forefront, but a more internal conflict. Make a movie that is actually about exploration but don’t have to turn it into a marvel or Star Wars movie where something is blowing up every ten minutes. It would be nice to see them really try something different with the movies. And that’s odd in itself since TVH proved (once again) you can actually do different things with the franchise that will get people to show up as long as its good and entertaining. But unfortunately they now seem to think a Star Trek movie can be ONLY be successful as an action franchise. They irony about TMP is the movie was such a bore and a disappointment, they moved Star Trek in the action realm which proved to be a huge hit. Good Luck explained how she ended up in Picard’s Universe “i am one of her DNA- Clones, that she created and trow the Probe trough an Wormhole and here i am!” New face: “I am not Jaylah, She was one of my Ancestors”. All that could connect is this famous Black Hole born out of Red Anti-Mater. She would be a fine ranger Chief Engineer if they would had an Flagshipīecause She is from the Kelvin-Timeline and Picard is not. But well, it would be nearly impossible to merge her with current Seven of Nine from Picard TV Series. Well at last she could be the Tough New Fresh face of the Ranger’s Crew. My only Guts feeling about her (I watched this Movie in the Cinema), she could fit together with Seven of Nine. We were very, very close during that shoot. He’s been incredible during filming, and after, and he remains a really good friend. But aside from being on the screen, we developed a real strong friendship. The actress did speak about working with Simon Pegg, who co-wrote Beyond, and said they remain close: I hear things all the time, but I don’t know what’s happening. I don’t know if they’re making a fourth one.
